SELECTION AND ACQUISITION POLICY
Our Library Policy expresses:
- The Library is a collection of special materials pertaining to Judaica.
- The Library should not be regarded as a substitute for a public library but rather as a supplement to it.
- Materials selected for the collection will be consistent with the values of Conservative Judaism.
- The collection will contain materials at all knowledge levels from a beginner to an advanced reader.
- The collection will include not more than 15% fiction.
- The fiction collection will include only materials that have Jewish content or themes.
All important areas of Jewish publishing must be represented. They are:

*Books pertaining to parenting and self help may not contain Judaic perspective.
Our selection is considerate of a number of criteria, including:
- The collection should be evaluated and weeded on an annual basis.
- The collection will support the curriculum of the Beth Tzedec Congregational School, and will contain materials at all reading levels from pre-school to adult.
- The Collection will include materials required to support educational programs at Beth Tzedec.
- The library will carry important Jewish periodicals
- The Collection will consist, predominantly of print materials as well as non- print media, such as Video, CD-Rom, audio CD, and computer software.
Library materials will be selected according to the following criteria (not in order of priority)
1. Permanent or timely value.
2. Relative importance in comparison with other books on the subject.
3. Accuracy of Information.
4. Comprehensiveness in breadth and scope.
5. Authority and competence of an author.
6. Readability.
7. Creativity and clarity of presentation.
8. Jewish perspective.
9. Consideration of appropriate language.
The Library will use the criteria above to evaluate the merit of each material and make decisions in conjunction with budgetary considerations.
Book donations to the Library are accepted only if they meet listed standards.
