On Thursday night, December 21, 2006, the UJA Federation of Greater Toronto and Canadian Jewish Congress, Ontario Region, organized a community rally here in Toronto in response to the Holocaust denial conference held in Tehran.
The Rally for Truth, Light and Freedom took place on the seventh night of Hanukkah in the largest synagogue in Canada (Beth Tzedec Congregation), attended by over 3,000 Jews, non Jews, young, old and political leaders from all three levels of government.Over 120 synagogues, Jewish and non Jewish organizations sponsored and promoted the rally.Professor Alan Dershowitz was the keynote speaker.Survivor testimonials included a live satellite link up with a retired Army officer, William McBurney, from his home in Queens, New York, who served with the 731st tank division that liberated one of the camps in Austria in which Max Eisen was incarcerated at the time.Both Max Eisen, who now lives in Toronto, and William McBurney spoke and appeared in the film clip of a new documentary that was shown as part of this event.
