Java suddenly does not work on my computer. |
| Solution |
Microsoft, as part of its competitive and legal war with Sun, has not only omitted Java capability (a Sun development) from current releases of its Internet Explorer browser, but it has actually withdrawn it from existing systems, without notifying existing users, via "patches" and/or "upgrades." We have three solutions.
- Fortunately, Sun has a FREE "add-on" available. Just press this button and follow the directions:

- Eventually Microsoft sent the following:
Step 1: Install Java Virtual Machine from the link below: http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
Step 2. Configure Internet Explorer to use Java: 1. Open Internet Explorer. 2. Click on Tools ->Internet Options 3. Click on Advanced tab 4. Go to the section Microsoft VM 5. Select the option 'Java console enabled (requires restart)' 6. Select the option 'Java logging enabled' 7. Select the option 'JIT compiler for virtual machine enabled (requires restart)' 8. Click Security tab 9. Click the Internet Web content zone 10. Click Custom Level 11. In the Settings box, scroll down to the Scripting section, and click Enable under Active scripting and Scripting of Java applets 12. Click Enable under Download signed ActiveX controls, Download unsigned ActiveX controls, Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe, Run ActiveX controls and plugins, and Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting 13. Under Java Permissions, make sure Disable Java is not selected. 14. Click OK
- As an alternative, many people are enjoying Mozilla Firefox as their browser. The download and switch from Microsoft Explorer take only a minute:

When I visit websites, the graphics are obviously distorted. |
| Solution |
AOL has chosen to utilize non-standard techniques to optimize its network and certain system versions of its subsidiary, Compuserve. Follow these instructions to turn off the use of AOL's non-industry-standard, graphics compression scheme.
- Click on "My AOL" and select "Preferences" from the menu to open the preferences window.
- Click on the "WWW" icon in the preferences window to open the "AOL Internet Properties" dialog box.
- Click on the "General" tab in the dialog box.
- Find the "Temporary Internet Files" area and click on the "Delete Files" button, a good periodic exercise in any case.
- Click on the "Web Graphics" tab in the dialog box.
- Turn off (uncheck) "Use compressed graphics."
- Click on the "OK" button at the bottom of the dialog box.
Now you are ready to fully enjoy graphics using sites. |
