Israel continues to be gripped by a crisis of unprecedented proportion. Four years since the outbreak of violence and terrorism across Israel, the country’s economic woes continue. More than 1.4 million Israelis now live in poverty. Unemployment has reached an historic high at 11%. Government benefits have been slashed and lines at Hazon Yeshaya soup kitchens are getting longer and longer. According to a study released in July, 30% of Israeli children are living below the poverty line, the highest rate of child poverty in the western world. Israeli children even fare worse than their counterparts in some developing countries such as Mexico (26%) and Turkey (20%).
