Zohar: Mystical Novel of Light

The Zohar is the essential text of Jewish mysticism. Structured as a commentary to the Torah, it also tells the story of a small group of spiritual adventurers. Our seminar will offer an analytical and joyful reading of the text in English (with original Aramaic available for those who prefer) with lots of discussion. Open to beginners and those with more experience with classical texts.

Walking with God

Based on a popular program developed by the Jewish University of America, we will investigate the way God has been understood in biblical, rabbinic, philosophical, mystical, Hasidic and modern times. This is an opportunity to explore your own beliefs in relationship to what other Jews have believed. Text study with lots of discussion.

Contemporary Jewish Thought: In Search of Meaning

Through the eyes of modern philosophers-theologians we will investigate issues that stimulate and challenge Jewish identity today: e.g., Tolerance and Pluralism, Gentile-Jewish Relations, Feminism, Zionism, God and the Holocaust. We will look at a wide spectrum of writers ranging from Benedict Spinoza, Nachman Krochmal and Yehezkel Kaufmann, to Rabbis Louis Jacobs, Ismar Schorsch and David Hartman.

Seeing the Bible with Fresh Eyes: Close Readings in Etz Hayim

This mini-course will focus on selected essays published in the Conservative Movement's Etz Hayim Torah Commentary (2001). The following essays will be scrutinized: Midrash, Revelation, God in the bible, Reward and Punishment, Dietary Laws, Prophecy and Prophets.

Technology, Modernity and Halakhah: Contemporary Issues in Jewish Law

The modern era and particularly the technological revolution of the last 20 years present questions of Jewish law unimaginable to the rabbis of old. You get to choose the weekly topic ranging from the kosher status of genetically modified foods to public lactation, from organ donation to videotaping on Shabbat. Come and learn what Jewish wisdom and Jewish law teach about these and many more fascinating contemporary issues.
