To the members of Beth Tzedec, from the B.T. Men’s Club
For many years, your B.T. Men’s Club has not only provided but also hand-delivered Yom Hashoah candles to your households.
This innovative program originated in the B.T. Men’s Club in the late 1970’s by Mr. Jules Surdin (a former president of the Men’s Club and of Beth Tzedec) and was expanded in Toronto, in Ontario and in Canada through our club. As word spread and demand grew, the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs (FJMC) based in the USA has managed the program and it has now expanded worldwide.
Each year, Yom Hashoah candles have been ordered and shipped to Beth Tzedec, where Men’s Club members, supported by volunteers including students, have packed the candles. Men’s Club candle captains have recruited volunteers from both within and outside the shul to deliver the candles, often aided by their children. This ensures that the memory of those who lost their lives in the Shoah will remain fresh and not forgotten.
Although the program is free to members, we do provide an envelope with the candle for those who wish to donate to the Men’s Club and the many programs we support both in the shul and outside.
During the last two years of COVID-19, this important program has not been possible but we wish to reassure you that we have not forgotten and look forward to restoring and renewing the program. Our Men’s Club remains active and meets on Zoom and we continue to support shul programs and some beyond.
Our wishes are for your good health and safety and a return for all to our sanctuary, to our Beth Tzedec.
