Becoming a Member

Why join Beth Tzedec?

Membership at Beth Tzedec Congregation makes an important statement of connection and commitment to the greater Jewish community, in Toronto, Israel and around the world. Membership enables you to enrich your Jewish life and puts you in contact with people who have similar interests. You can observe your moments of joy and sorrow within a sensitive and supportive community. Membership provides many opportunities to celebrate our traditions and helps ensure a bright Jewish future.

Membership Privileges

  • Beth Tzedec Congregation is available to our members seven days a week, 365 days a year. We are a community that provides programming for all ages, a synaplex of prayer services, support and comfort in difficult times, and assistance and encouragement to help to make the most of special lifecycle events.

  • Membership includes tickets for the High Holy Days, allowing access to all our varied services and programs offered on these days. Tickets for all dependent children under the age of 18 are included.

  • Members receive reduced rates on clergy services, programs fees, room rentals and cemetery plots at Beth Tzedec Memorial Park.

  • Members who marry at Beth Tzedec are offered the gift of free membership the year following their wedding.

  • Membership provides a meaningful home for children and adults to learn and grow as Jews.

Synagogue Commitment

Membership contributions constitute the largest source of funds for our annual operating budget, covering the costs of keeping our synagogue open and available to you and your family. Annual contributions provide for programming for all ages, prayer services, support and comfort in difficult times, and assistance and encouragement to help make the most of your special lifecycle events. Membership contributions and your involvement enable Beth Tzedec to be a destination for Jewish Living.

Fair Share

At Beth Tzedec we use a “fair share” system, where each member unit makes an annual contribution for membership, including amounts for capital levy and security, based on each family’s ability to contribute. We understand that every member has a different capacity to give, so Beth Tzedec has a Membership Contribution Schedule which consists of a series of graduated levels. Special consideration is given to 18 to 34-year-olds to recognize their evolving financial circumstances. All congregants who are 35 and older are asked to pay an amount that reflects their financial situation, using family net taxable income as a starting point and taking into consideration certain other substantial expenses for which they are committed. A “fair share” membership contribution system also allows Beth Tzedec to accept members who otherwise would be unable to afford membership in a “fixed dues” system (where all members pay the same level, regardless of their financial situation).

We ask that you submit a Membership Form  and confidentially share your relevant financial information so that together we can find the membership contribution category that is manageable for you and fair to other members.
