Vessels of Song Exhibit: Faces of New Jewish Music
A Photography Exhibit by David Kaufman
Jan 07 2015, 8:00AM to 8:00PM
NOTE: This event has already occurred.
The revival of Yiddish music was one of the most distinctive developments in late 20th century Jewish culture. Young musicians were determined not merely to imitate what was played a century earlier by klezmorim (from the Hebrew klei zener--vessels of song) in Bessarabia or in early 20th century American, but to create something substantially new. The revival gave birth to an explosion of new Jewish music expressed in festivals all around the globe, including KlezKanada in Montreal and Ashkenaz in Toronto.
David Kaufman, as official photographer over many years of both the KlezKanada and Ashkenaz festivals, has created striking portraits and candid images of three generations of Jewish musical performers, their students and their fans. The exhibition, with a selection of 40 images, will continue through March 2015.
