Life as a Refugee: Dawit Demoz in conversation with David Zarnett, PHD

Refugee Awareness Shabbat

Mar 07 2021, 4:00PM to 5:30PM in the Zoom..
NOTE: This event has already occurred.

Dawit Demoz was born in Eritrea, a country in East Africa ravaged by war with neighbouring Ethiopia.  In 2009, facing overwhelming obstacles and many near-death experiences, Dawit fled home in an effort to secure a more stable life. He made his way to Israel and then, with the help of a Canadian Jewish family, to Toronto.  This past September, Dawit became a Canadian citizen.  But, Dawit’s family remains in Ethiopia as refugees, where they are caught up in a violent conflict that continues to spiral out of control and where they remain desperate for the financial assistance they need to survive and make it to Canada to re-unite with their loved one.

At this event, you will learn more about Dawit’s story. You will hear an inside account of what it means to be a refugee, to have your life turned upside down through no fault of your own. You will learn about the inspiring work of a small but dedicated group of concerned community members that is trying to help Dawit and his family re-unite in Canada. And you will learn about how you can help them, and Dawit, achieve their goal.

Program can be accessed through Zoom and Facebook/ YouTube.

Refugee Shabbat Weekend Overview

On the weekend of March 5-7, 2021, we welcome you to join us as Beth Tzedec participates in JIAS/HIAS Refugee Awareness Shabbat. This refugee awareness shabbat is a moment for our members to turn outward and dedicate a shabbat experience to the millions of refugees around the world fleeing persecution and violence. For many of us, it will also be an opportunity to reflect on the past refugee experiences within our own families.

Over the course of the weekend, Beth Tzedec with the support of its Refugee Sponsorship Committee will provide programming that will include a special Shabbat at the Floor Kabbalat Shabbat, Havdalah ceremony, refugee focused sermon/D'var Torah and a keynote hour-long program on Sunday, March 7, 2021.

Please consider making a donation to the Beth Tzedec Refugee Fund.
