French-Jewish philosopher Emmanuel Levinas saw the Egyptian leader’s unprecedented 1977 visit to Israel and his address to the Knesset as an extraordinary ethical gesture. To Levinas, Sadat's actions transcended politics and set in motion the events leading up to the Camp David accords, while ultimately costing Sadat his life.
